Want & Knight of VisualSyntaxOutput.com have been at it again! Starting with a piece of scrap wood used to test stains and sealer coats during our last project, our imagination and hands-on, DIY, your-gear-is-good-enough approach took us on another fulfilling ride! We are happy to introduce The Duplex Beat Box! It's an original mixed-media artwork that doubles as a portable speaker box and definite conversation-starter!

About a month or so after we'd finished The Chess Series, Want grabbed the board we'd used for stain testing and started drawing on it. At the time, he was listening to tracks in his iTunes by one of his favorite DJ's - DJ DuPlex. Inspired by the music and aware of DuPlex' affiliation with ArtisticCriminals.com, he sketched out the AC logo on the board. Over the next few months, the board would be picked up and sketched on, but never finished. Recently, Want finally decided to use his "white house primer and ballpoint layers" technique on the board and render a beautiful plant he had seen in a nature book. Once, the plant was underway and beginning to really pop, it was just a matter of making artistic adjustments and reacting to how the colors and marks were looking with the wood textures. Striving for continuity of marks, effective composition, and textural balance, the artwork was finally completed and ready to hang. Or, so we thought…

A few nights later, when Want got the idea to add an actual iPod to the piece, things really went to the next level. And, after three days of problem solving and experimentation with what was at hand in the studio-and very little sleep, we had come up with a way to mount the iPod into the art/speaker box so that it was not only connected to the speakers to play music, but was installed with the iPod screen viewable from the front of the box while running photo slideshows along with the music tracks. Like a snowball, this project just gained momentum and grew! Layer after layer! Once the iPod was installed, Want begain tayloring the iPod content (photography, design work, etc.) to go along with the surface marks and the DJ DuPlex & Artistic Criminals theme of the project.
